Where the money goes
Putting Books in Children’s Hands
Once Upon a Gilded Age is a night of dressing up as the storybook characters we grew up loving, all to help the children who are just meeting them for the first time. The ball is hosted by The Pink Flamingo Society of Jekyll Island, and a portion of Book Ball proceeds benefits children’s literacy.
The costume theme
The Golden Age of Children’s Literature
The Gilded Age was also the Golden Age of Children’s Literature.
The same decades when America’s wealthiest families wintered at the Jekyll Island Club gave us Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Little Women, Treasure Island, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, and The Secret Garden. The storybook characters we still love and the Club’s history come from the same remarkable moment.
Come as your favorite hero, heroine, or villain from the Golden Age of Children’s Literature, from Alice and the Mad Hatter to Captain Hook and the Wicked Witch of the West. Wings, elf ears, pirate hats, and wizard robes encouraged.
